What is an educational assessment?

At BPG, we understand that every child learns, thinks, and experiences the world in their own way. Our youth educational assessments are made to identify strengths and uncover challenges that may be affecting your child’s academic or emotional development. If you’ve noticed your child is having difficulties at school, has trouble focusing, or is showing differences in behaviour, our assessment can provide the clarity you need to move forward with confidence.

We offer educational and behavioural assessments for children and teens that are customized to their age and stage of cognitive development. With support from our compassionate team, you’ll receive insights and recommendations that can help your child thrive in the classroom and beyond.

Youth educational
& behavioural assessments

The most common reasons to get an assessment include:

  • They are falling behind in school or struggling to meet grade-level expectations.
  • Teachers or caregivers have noticed concerns about attention, memory, or processing speed.
  • You’re exploring options for learning accommodations or an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • They are showing signs of emotional distress, frustration, or behavioural challenges related to school.
  • You want to better understand how your child learns and how to support their growth.

The goal of our assessments is to provide a deeper understanding of how your child thinks, learns, and functions in academic and social environments. The findings can support the development of learning strategies, referrals for additional support, and improved communication between home and school.

Types of youth assessments

We provide a range of assessments for children and teens that look at multiple areas of development. Each type of assessment involves a clinical interview, medical and academic history review, and standardized testing.

Psychoeducational Assessment

A psychoeducational assessment helps identify learning challenges and academic strengths. It may be used to diagnose learning disorders or to uncover areas of difficulty related to reading, writing, math, memory, or attention. This assessment is often recommended when a child is falling behind in school, struggling with homework, or not responding to traditional supports.

ADHD Assessment

Our ADHD assessment evaluates a child’s attention, impulsivity, organization, and executive functioning. Through interviews, in-depth testing, and input from parents and/or educators, we can provide an ADHD diagnosis if it is shown in the assessment. A proper diagnosis can open the door to access better medical, therapeutic, and educational support for your child.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment

A comprehensive evaluation of social communication, behavioural patterns, sensory processing, and cognitive functioning. Every Autism Spectrum Disorder assessment at Bhatia Psychology Group includes the ADOS-2, a structured, evidence-based observational assessment administered by a psychologist with specialized training in its use. Incorporating the ADOS-2 alongside clinical interviews, standardized measures, and collateral information helps ensure a thorough and well-rounded evaluation.

Giftedness Assessment

A formal evaluation of intellectual ability, cognitive strengths, and academic potential. Recommended when a child demonstrates advanced reasoning, problem-solving, or learning abilities, becomes bored or disengaged in typical classroom settings, or requires documentation to support a gifted program application. A gifted assessment can also help identify children whose advanced abilities may coexist with learning, attention, or other developmental differences, ensuring both their strengths and support needs are recognized.

Frequently asked questions

Youth educational assessments

How do I know which assessment my child needs?

The best starting point is a consultation with our team. We can help you determine the most appropriate assessment based on your concerns, your child’s history, and what questions you most need answered. In some cases, a child may present with more than one area of concern that requires a more comprehensive evaluation. For example, a child may experience attention difficulties alongside learning challenges, or demonstrate characteristics of giftedness while also struggling with attention or executive functioning. Our psychologists will guide you in determining the most appropriate assessment approach based on your child’s unique needs

Can my child have more than one assessment?

Yes. Multiple assessments can be conducted either together or sequentially, depending on your child’s needs and the clinical picture. Our team will discuss the most efficient and appropriate approach for your child’s specific situation during the intake process.

Are assessments conducted by psychologists?

Yes. All youth assessments at Bhatia Psychology Group are conducted and interpreted by registered clinical psychologists. This matters because psychological assessment requires not just the administration of tests, but the clinical expertise to interpret results in the context of a child’s full developmental and emotional profile and to make recommendations that are genuinely useful.

What happens after the assessment?

Every assessment concludes with a written report and a dedicated feedback session with your psychologist where the findings are explained in clear language and next steps are discussed. Where therapy or ongoing support is recommended, our team can provide that within the same practice. An assessment at Bhatia Psychology Group is not an endpoint; it’s a doorway to understanding and action.

How long does an assessment take?

Assessment timelines vary depending on the type and scope of evaluation. Most assessments involve an intake session, one or more testing sessions, scoring and report preparation, and a feedback session with your psychologist. Your clinician will discuss expected timelines during your first appointment.

Do you offer virtual assessment services?

Most youth assessments require in-person attendance at our Richmond Hill clinic, as standardized testing tools are administered directly with your child. Intake consultations and feedback sessions may be available virtually. Please speak with us to confirm what is available for your child’s specific assessment needs.

Can assessments support IEP or access to other academic support?

Yes. The findings and recommendations from the assessment can be used to support requests for accommodations or learning plans through your child’s school. We will walk you through this process and answer any questions you have once the assessment is complete.
