Youth giftedness assessment

Every child has their own strengths and weaknesses. However, some children might show signs of advanced abilities that make them stand out. This can shape how they learn, engage, and experience the world.

A giftedness assessment can help identify children who may benefit from enriched or accelerated educational opportunities. At Bhatia Psychology Group, our giftedness assessment evaluates whether your child meets the criteria for gifted programming and helps you better understand their intellectual and academic potential.

What is a giftedness assessment?

A giftedness assessment is a formal evaluation that will measure your child’s intellectual and cognitive abilities. Our testing looks at areas such as problem-solving, memory, processing speed, verbal and non-verbal reasoning.

Along with high achievement, gifted children may also experience frustration, boredom, or social challenges when their needs aren’t being met in the classroom. Our giftedness assessment offers clarity and direction so you can advocate for the right level of support.

It’s recommended when:

  • Your child shows advanced reasoning, language, or problem-solving skills for their age.
  • They become bored or disengaged in typical classroom environments.
  • They need more challenge or stimulation to stay motivated at school.
  • You want formal documentation to support applications for gifted programs.
  • There are mixed messages from teachers, with strengths in some areas and challenges in others.

What the giftedness assessment includes

Intake

We begin with an intake session to understand your child’s developmental history, learning style, and any specific questions or goals you have for the assessment.

Testing

The assessment typically includes standardized testing to measure intellectual and academic functioning. The testing we provide will depend largely on your child’s age.

Results & recommendations

After scoring and interpreting the results, we provide a written report outlining your child’s cognitive strengths and, if applicable, areas where additional support may be helpful. This report can be used to support placement in gifted or enrichment programs.

Supporting gifted learners

Gifted children benefit from more than just academic challenges. They often need support in areas like emotional regulation, social connection, and perfectionism. Our psychologists can help you understand the full picture of your child’s development and provide suggestions that extend beyond the classroom.

If you believe your child may be gifted, contact us to schedule a consultation or to learn more about our assessment process.

Frequently asked questions

Giftedness assessment

Will my child’s school be informed of the assessment results?
The results will only be shared if you (legal guardian) choose to do so. When families choose to share the report with the child’s school, it is typically to support applications for gifted programs or to advocate for enrichment opportunities.
How should I prepare my child for the assessment?
There is no need for academic studying or test preparation. A good night’s sleep and a nutritious meal before the appointment can help them feel focused and comfortable.
What is the fee for the giftedness assessment?

A giftedness assessment typically requires between 4 to 8 hours of in-person appointments and 2-4 weeks for the total process. The psychologist will provide a full breakdown of costs in the initial consultation, depending on the needs of the child. Note that prices may be subject to change, so kindly inquire at info@bhatiapsychology.com to confirm.

What if my child doesn’t meet the criteria for being “gifted”?
Even if your child does not meet formal gifted criteria, the assessment will still provide valuable information about their learning style and development. We will highlight cognitive strengths, areas for growth, and offer recommendations for support.
Do you offer other types of youth assessments?
Yes. In addition to giftedness assessments, we also offer psychoeducational assessments, ADHD assessments, and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessments. If you’re unsure which assessment is most appropriate, we’re happy to guide you through the options during a consultation.
