Adult ADHD assessments

Our adult ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) assessment aims to provide an accurate diagnosis by evaluating skills such as attention, self-regulation, concentration, impulse control, and organization through an extensive background history and testing measures.

This can help guide future treatment and support for those diagnosed with ADHD. With the right treatment plan and support, individuals with ADHD can thrive and live happy, fulfilling lives.

An assessment may be helpful for any of the following reasons:

  • Seeking accommodations at work or school to get the support you need to succeed.
  • Gaining clarity on your symptoms and how they affect your daily life.
  • Being able to seek effective treatment to manage your symptoms.
  • Understanding whether ADHD is contributing to your difficulties (or if it is something else).

What is an ADHD assessment?

Our Adult ADHD Assessment at Bhatia Psychology Group is used in diagnosing ADHD and developing a clear path forward. During the assessment, we evaluate skills such as attention, self-regulation, impulsivity, and organizational abilities. We will also look at your medical, school, and family history to help with our clinical diagnosis.

It is important to note that ADHD symptoms will present differently from person to person. It is also crucial to differentiate ADHD from other conditions that may resemble ADHD which can be determined during the assessment.

It’s recommended when:

  • You are easily distracted.
  • You have problems concentrating or focusing.
  • You have challenges with organization.
  • You regularly act impulsively.
  • You partake in destructive behaviours.
  • You have trouble staying on task.

Adult ADHD assessment process

Determining an ADHD diagnosis involves criteria that examine all the above. It also includes differentiating between the three different types when a diagnosis is made. ADHD testing includes the following steps:

Intake

This first step involves discussions to gather necessary background information. Typically, this includes collecting information regarding your developmental history, work/academic performance, and behavioural observations.

Assessment

Assessment involves a diagnostic interview. It further includes various tests to evaluate:

  • Cognitive abilities
  • Work/Academic skills
  • Memory
  • Attention
  • Executive functioning

These assessments help to rule out other conditions, as well as identify specific challenges related to your ADHD (if a diagnosis is made).

Treatment

There are many treatment options to help you manage your ADHD symptoms. Based on the results of your assessment, we provide a detailed report with personalized recommendations. This may include behavioural strategies, lifestyle adjustments, and potential treatment options such as therapy or medication.

Types of adult ADHD

There are three major types of ADHD, each with varying dominant symptoms. These include:

Inattentive Type ADHD

Inattentive ADHD is characterized primarily by difficulties maintaining attention and organization. It’s often associated with trouble following through on tasks. With this type, you may daydream frequently and become easily distracted.

Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD

The subtype is often marked by excessive physical activity, impulsive behavior, and impulse control. With this subtype, you may often struggle with restlessness, impulsivity, and may find it challenging to wait your turn or think before acting.

Combined ADHD

This encompasses symptoms of both inattentive and hyperactivity-impulsive ADHD. With this subtype, you may exhibit challenges in sustaining attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and difficulties with organization and focus.

What is typically included in the Adult ADHD assessment?
Similarly to our comprehensive psychological assessment, an adult ADHD assessment includes a semi-structured clinical interview and a standard battery of tests. This allows us to gain a deeper understanding of your history, concerns and behaviours. We also include the following, which are specific to our adult ADHD assessment.
– Additional screening measures
– Direct assessment of focus and attention
– More extensive background history
– Additional scoring and reporting
However, since every person’s symptoms are unique, the details are to be confirmed during the initial appointment.
Do I need to bring anything to the assessment?

We will provide you with information regarding documentation or paperwork we would like you to bring prior to your assessment. This will typically include copies of school reports (if available), medical records, any past assessments, and pre-assessment questionnaires/forms.

What if I am not diagnosed with ADHD?
If you’re not diagnosed with ADHD, the therapist will still be able to provide you with information in terms of next steps. This could include other assessments or recommended therapies based on your symptoms.
How can I benefit from the diagnosis?
Receiving an ADHD diagnosis as an adult can be both validating and empowering. With the right support, you can learn to navigate challenges and harness your strengths. Whether you have been experiencing symptoms since youth or this has something that has recently come up, an evaluation and diagnosis can provide you with the answers you need to move forward.
